How it works

There are four main ways to get our books into your phone:

Bluetooth
Bluetooth
  1. Pair the phone and your PC.
  2. Copy the .jar to the phone.
  3. The phone may ask you to choose a destination for the file, there should be some 'application' area available.
(See howstuffworks or wikipedia for some background on bluetooth).
Memory Card
External Memory Cards
  1. Copy the book files to the external memory card (e.g. miniSD, microSD) for your phone.
  2. Insert the card into the phone.
  3. On the phone, locate the file and launch it.
    • Some phones will run the book directly from the memory card.
    • Some will want to install the book in the phone's main memory and will ask if you want to download or install it.
    • They will most likely install the program in the usual application area.
    • Note: on Blackberry devices use the media player and choose 'explore' from the menu to navigate the memory card, 'open' the .jar to begin installation.
USB Connection
USB Connection
Your phone may have a USB connector and manager software.
  1. Run the manager program.
  2. Copy the .jar file to a folder in the phone.
Note: The manager software provided with some phone models (eg.LG model U8360) may not install JavaTM programs to the phone. You will need a Java uploader, for example Game-Thing offers a fantastic Java uploader that also does many of the ' vanilla ' manager tasks (like transferring photos) much better than some phone software.
Direct to Phone
Direct to phone "over the air"
If you can access the Internet from your phone then:
  1. Use the phone's browser to navigate to http://mobile.wattypeople.blogspot.com
  2. Download directly by quoting the Download Code for the desired book.
  3. The Download Code appears on each book's page.
  4. Click on the link for the book you want to download
  5. The phone should prompt you to install it. Usually this is a two click process; the first to fetch details of the download, and the second to allow installation.
Things to note:
  1. Keep in mind the distinction between mobile and internet downloads. If you download using the phone's browser from mobile.wattypeople.blogspot.com then the phone should try to directly install the book. Downloading via www.wattypeople.blogspot.com is designed to support those without internet connectivity on their phone and will give you files that need to be transferred / installed on the phone from a PC.
  2. BlackberryTM devices can make use of our books. Note that corporate / carrier firewalls and policies can prevent the device from installing our books. You can always talk to your service provider, they may have a simple tweak to enable installation.
  3. Some phones will have maximum jar sizes smaller than our largest books.
  4. WindowsTM based mobile phones, PalmTM devices, and iPhonesTM may not have a JavaTM environment installed. If that were the case then they might happily download from mobile.bookinmyphone.com but then not be able to make use of the download. Similarly they would happily download the .zip file from the internet site but them be unable to use the resulting download. We believe there are java environments available but cannot make any recommendations. If you have some personal experience in this are we would like to be able to pass it on to our other users - so please let us know.
Problems?
If you have a problem that is not addressed by the notes above then there may be something we need to fix on our end here. We want to know about install problems so we can deliver to the widest range of phones.
Some install issues are subtle and dependant on phone model or carrier connectivity. For these we might need to work with you to figure out what the issue is. A problem resolution would likely help many other people get a book in their phone.
If you had trouble getting the book on your phone but managed to figure it out, please let us know (wattyblog@gmail.com   or  wattypeople@gmail.com) so we can incorporate the information on this website and share that information with other users.

Reading on the phone

What if someone calls me when I'm reading?
No problem. Your phone should automatically 'pause' the book. Just answer the call as you normally would. When the call finishes, your phone should return to where you left off in the book.

Can I make call while I'm reading?
Yes, you can. Just 'close' the book by pressing your phone's 'hang up' button. Return to your phone's menu/area where you dial the number as usual.

How will I remember where I was up to in my book?
You don't have to - it is automatically bookmarked for you. Whenever you return to a particular book in your phone, it should automatically resume where you left off.

Won't it be hard to see the words on a screen?
Not at all. Its like reading an SMS message. You can also choose the font size to suit your personal preference. There is also a night-vision mode to make reading in the dark easy on the eyes.

What kind of phone will I need?
We package the book and reader together as a JavaTM program. If your phone can play Java games (most modern phones can), it can read our books.
Some phones, for example WindowsTM based smart phones, some Palm TreosTM, or iPhonesTM do not have java support built in out of the box. In many cases there exist official java environments you can install (e.g. an IBM java environment for TreoTM), or unofficial hacks that can be applied. If you have success with a workaround like this please let us know.
We have made every effort to ensure that our reader will work for all JavaTM capable phones that support either MIDP 2.0 or MIDP 1.0 standards. However, in some instances phone manufacturers can vary their implementations. If you experience any problems please let us know. We will be able to assist you if necessary and update our information provided.

Is it safe? Can I get a 'computer virus' on my phone?

To keep the phone safe the JavaTM environment is designed to restrict how programs can interact with the phone and phone services. The provider of the java environment (phone manufacturer / carrier) takes responsibility for controlling if and how programs might interact with phone services. For example before making an internet connection the phone should either prompt you for permission or require the application to have been cryptographically signed by the manufacturer / carrier.
Our basic reader only uses the basic text display and simple program only information storage. This means it cannot make network connections, cannot interact with bluetooth, cannot initiate calls etc. Showing you the text of the books is all it does.
We have a new reader that you can ask to send SMS messages or open a browser on our mobile site. These capabilities can only be initiated by you, your phone should ask you to confirm that you are allowing the operation. Additional functionality is called out one the individual book pages.
